My Cabbage Week 5, The Little Shop of Horrors

This is week 5.  The weather was crazy again this week.  As I mentioned in my last post, we took off the waterwall because it was suppose to be nice and sunny.  I checked on my cabbage the next afternoon and it looked like it was almost dead.  The leaves were wilted and on the ground.  My mom and I quickly put the waterwall back on.  This cabbage does NOT like the hot weather.  Within 2 hours, my cabbage leaves were perked back up and did not have any signs that it had been on the verge of death. It likes to be all cozy in its waterwall.  My mom says that this cabbage plant is like the Little Shop of Horrors plant because it is very picky.  In the movie, they sing a song called "Grow for Me."  Here are the lyrics, that remind me of growing this cabbage.

I've given you sunshine
I've given you dirt
You've given me nothin'
But heartache and hurt!
I'm beggin' you sweetly
I'm down on my knees.
Oh please-
Grow for me.

I've given you plantfood

And water to sip
I've given you potash.
You've given me zip.
Oh god how I mist you
Oh pod how you tease
So please-
Grow for me.

I've given you Southern exposure

To get you to thrive
I've pinched you back hard,
Like I'm supposed ta,
Your're barely alive
I've tried you at levels of moisture,
From desert to mud.

I've given you grow-lights and mineral supplements.

What do you want from me?
Blood?

I am definitely not giving it my blood, but for now, it will stay in its waterwall.  When the temperature goes from 85 degrees back down to almost freezing in a matter of days, I think it is best to keep it in the waterwall.

Here is a picture of me with my cabbage.  It has grown a ton this week!

Here is a picture of my cabbage in the waterwall. See how it has almost outgrown it?  I am not sure what I will do when it gets too big for it?!?!

My Cabbage Week 4, A New Leaf

This is week four.  This week my cabbage is sprouting new baby leaves in the center.  Although two of my bigger leaves did not survive, I will have some that will take their place.  My dad fertilized my cabbage again this week.  I think the fertilizer does help my cabbage to grow.  My cabbage is growing bigger, so we took the waterwall off tonight.  We will see how it goes for the next few days.  The weather might get a little stormy next week, so we might put it back on again.  Here is a picture of me with my cabbage.

My Cabbage Week 3 Greenhouse Cabbage

This is week 3.  My Uncle Craig came to visit from southern Utah this week, and gave me a cute butterfly garden stick that says "Spring is Here."  I decided to put it next to my cabbage.  Thanks Uncle Craig, I just love it.

At the beginning of the week, my cabbage was a little limp. The weather this week has been crazy.  One minute it's warm and sunny, and the next minute it's cold and rainy, sometimes even snowing. For this reason, my dad bought me a waterwall to put around my cabbage to protect it and keep it warm like a greenhouse.  I held the sides of the teal green plastic wall which has pockets that you fill with water to insulate the cabbage, while my mom filled it with warm water. After we filled all the pockets with water, we closed the sides of the waterwall so it looked like a teepee.  This is a picture of me and my greenhouse cabbage.

I check on my cabbage each night to water it, and it seems to be looking better. The leaves are not so limp, and more leaves are sprouting in the center.  I am excited about this because I was afraid that my cabbage was not going to survive the weather.  I am looking forward to the coming week to see what happens next.  This is a picture of my cabbage tonight inside the waterwall.

My Cabbage Week 2, Snowy Cabbage!

This is week two.  Lots of things happened this week.  First I planted my cabbage on Wednesday.  My dad bought me some soil and fertilizer for my cabbage.  He mixed in the good soil with the dirt in my backyard and dug a hole for my cabbage.  I tore off the bottom of the biodegradable container and planted it in the hole.  I covered it with dirt and made sure that the leaves were not covered with dirt.  My dad hooked up the hose and we watered and fertilized the cabbage.  I am not very good at using the hose yet, but I will get better as time goes on.  Here are some pictures of me planting my cabbage plant.

Friday morning we woke to SNOW!  In Utah, you never know what kind of weather you may have. My mom got a bucket and put it over my cabbage to keep it from freezing.  At first I was worried that it was not getting any sunlight, but I guess it will be okay.  We have to keep the bucket on tonight because it is suppose to be pretty cold.  Here is a picture of my Snowy Cabbage!
